Cownseling

The Process

First Session. We will gather background information about you and discuss what your goals are for counseling. We will sit outside in a shaded, secluded area and be able to say hi to the cows in passing.

Second Session. We begin to work with the therapy cows. You will receive a short safety orientation and be able to ask any questions. With Kate’s assistance, you will greet one of the animals. Throughout the process you will be educated on their behavioral cues, and reflect on your own as you and the cow show safety and trust.

Following Sessions. After you are comfortable being around the cows, we will use a combination of talk therapy, mindfulness, and somatic exercises during sessions.

Why Cows?

Mindfulness. While we may be thinking of all the things that we need to fix in the future or mistakes of the past, cows are grounding, showing us to just be there in the present with them. Slowing down helps us be more aware of our thoughts, and accept whatever emotions come up.

Interpersonal skills. Spending time with animals can increase our social skills, help us read behavior more effectively, and as a result, be more understanding. We can form safe relationships with animals that can then be applied in our relationships.

Relaxation/Nervous system regulation. Heart rate variability occurs when in the presence of other animals. This occurs expecially with cows, whose presence is so large! Many studies on human-animal interaction show that interacting with them decreases cortisol the stress hormone and increases oxytocin a feel good hormone.

Who can it help?

COWnseling can help many different types of clients, but most notably individuals who may experience:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship trauma
  • ADHD
  • Codependency
  • Individuals who struggle with traditional types of therapy
  • Anyone who loves animals

However, animal assisted therapy with cows is not for everyone, such as individuals who have intense seasonal or animal allergies, those who are not able to be outside for long periods of time due to health concerns or immunocompromised individuals, those who are unable to walk on unsteady terrain, or those who have a history of mistreating animals.
